The
Detroit Sports Commission (DSC), a subsidiary of Visit Detroit (Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau), launched its 25th Anniversary celebration today, marking a quarter-century of championships, comebacks, and community impact that have helped solidify Detroit's reputation as a premier destination for world-class sporting events. The milestone kickoff included the unveiling of a commemorative logo that will anchor a series of events, storytelling, and community-focused programming throughout 2026.
Since its inception in 2001, the DSC has helped transform Detroit into a nationally and globally recognized sports destination—attracting and hosting hundreds of professional, collegiate, youth, and amateur sporting events that have generated millions of dollars in economic impact and lasting community benefits.
"For 25 years, the Detroit Sports Commission has connected sport with purpose—strengthening our region's economy, elevating Detroit's profile on the national stage, and ensuring that major events leave a meaningful legacy in our communities," said
Marty Dobek, executive director of the Detroit Sports Commission. "This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate how far we've come, honor the partnerships that made it possible, and look ahead to what's next for Detroit as a premier sports tourism destination."
Early milestones, including securing the AAU Junior Olympic Games in 2003, established Detroit's credibility and set the stage for an extraordinary run of marquee events—from the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL to NCAA championships, international competitions, and legacy-defining moments across sports. More recently, the DSC has played an integral role in hosting the record-setting 2024 NFL Draft and has secured a robust pipeline of future events, including the 2027 NCAA® Men's Final Four®, 2028 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament, 2028 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Midwest Regional, and multiple upcoming USGA championships.
Early success as a sports commission took place under the visionary leadership and strategic positioning of
Dave Beachnau, who served as DSC Executive Director for more than two decades. Under Beachnau's guidance, Detroit has been forged as a nationally respected championship host city and premier destination.
"The Detroit Sports Commission's success from inception to present day is due to the vision and strategic execution that occurred under
Dave Beachnau," said Dobek. "For more than two decades, Dave has been instrumental in bringing world-class events to our region and has placed Detroit at the center of the sports world. Without his leadership, the Detroit Sports Commission doesn't experience the success that it has."
The newly unveiled 25
th Anniversary logo symbolizes the strength, longevity, and sustainability of the DSC. The image will serve as a visual thread throughout the anniversary campaign as the organization reflects on its history, while highlighting the future of sports tourism in Detroit.
Throughout 2026, the DSC will mark the milestone with a series of celebratory moments, including signature events, storytelling, partner spotlights, and community initiatives tied to the organization's Living Legacy efforts—reinforcing the DSC's longstanding commitment to ensuring that sports create impact beyond competition.
